It was presented in February 1936 in Berlin at the 26th International Automobile and Motorcycle Exhibition (IAMA), together with the models Mercedes-Benz 260 D and Mercedes-Benz 170 H with rear-mounted engine. The W 136 was the only passenger car model from the pre-war period that Daimler-Benz continued to produce after the Second World War. Even during the war, several variants were built under this model designation for military purposes as well as commercial vehicle versions. In combination with the chassis of the larger Mercedes-Benz W 153 (230), numerous variants of the Mercedes-Benz 170 S were also produced, which were later officially designated as W 191. In 1953, the series was finally replaced by the completely newly developed Mercedes-Benz W 120 “Ponton”.
