Der mächtige Rumpf des auf der A330-200 basierenden Tankflugzeugs nimmt weit über 100 t Kraftstoff zur Abgabe an andere Flugzeuge oder stattdessen 45 t Fracht oder 300 Soldaten auf. Unter optimalen Bedingungen kann die A330 MRTT selbst bis zu 14.800 km weit fliegen. Erstkunde wurde seinerzeit Australien und stellte das Flugzeug Mitte 2011 in Dienst. Bis heute sind es gut zehn Länder, deren Luftwaffen rund 70 Maschinen bestellt haben. Dazu gehört auch Frankreich. Hier trägt das Flugzeug den Zusatznamen Phénix, die Lieferungen begannen 2018 an das 31. Geschwader in Istres-Le Tubé im Département Bouche-du-Rhone.
