Der Hauptunterschied zwischen der militärischen C-118 und dem zivilen DC-6-Verkehrsflugzeug ist der Einbau einer großen Frachttür auf der linken Seite. Dieses Flugzeug diente als offizielle Air Force One für die Präsidenten Kennedy und Johnson. Die VC-118A wurde schon bald von der Einführung der ersten Boeing VC-137 überschattet. Beide Präsidenten zogen es vor, im größeren, schnelleren Jet zu reisen, und die VC-118 wurde dann hauptsächlich für kurze Reisen zu Flughäfen eingesetzt, die für die größeren Boeings zu klein waren. Dieses Flugzeug ist heute im Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona ausgestellt.
Mit dieser ersten von bald drei A321-Frachtern betreibt Lufthansa Cargo zum ersten Mal seit den 1990er Jahren Flugzeuge für die Kurz- und Mittelstrecke. Die 40. Staffel mit ihren P-47 Thunderbolt-Jägern war Teil der massiven Allierten Aufgebots zur Befreiung Europas von der Nazi-Herrschaft. Die Einheit wurde 1946 als 190. Jagdstaffel auf der Gowen Field Luftbasis im US-Bundesstaat Idaho neu aufgestellt und konnte somit 2021 sein 7. Jubiläum begehen. Die Einheit feierte das Ereignis mit einer historischen Lackierung, die eine P-47 der Einheit 75 Jahre zuvor trug.
