The Boeing 747-400 is a large, long-haul wide-body airliner built by Boeing Commercial Airplanes as an enhanced development of the original Boeing 747. Initially presented as the Advanced Series 300 at the Farnborough Airshow in September 1984, the program aimed to lower operating costs by 10 percent through more efficient engines and to extend the range by 1,000 nautical miles (1,900 km; 1,200 mi). Northwest Airlines became the launch customer on October 22, 1985, placing an order for ten aircraft. The first 747-400 was rolled out on January 26, 1988. It completed its maiden flight on April 29, 1988, received type certification on January 9, 1989, and entered commercial service with Northwest on February 9, 1989.
